New Delhi: At 14, Ishaan Gupta, a Class 9 student of The Mother’s International School, brought nearly *six years* of experimentation and creativity to Delhi with ‘An Origami Odyssey’, a three-day exhibition held from September 25 to 27 at Open Palm Court, India Habitat Centre.
The exhibition featured Ishaan’s works across tessellations, geometric forms, animal figures, wall art, lights and sculptures, showcasing how paper can be transformed through precision, patience and imagination. His creations also reflected his interest in geometry, mathematics, patterns, design and three-dimensional forms.
The exhibition was inaugurated by architect and artist Ankon Mitra, whose practice explores the relationship between origami, architecture and space.
A free origami workshop held on September 26 added an interactive dimension to the exhibition. Open to visitors and children, the session introduced participants to basic folding techniques and allowed them to create their own pieces. Among those who participated were children from the India Vision Foundation, who joined other visitors in the hands-on activity.
The exhibition also had a philanthropic component, with a portion of the money raised through the initiative set to be donated to an NGO.
Ishaan’s association with origami began during the Covid-19 pandemic and has since developed into a sustained creative practice. His learning journey has included a visit to Tokyo, where he learnt one-on-one from origami artist Taro Yaguchi. Over the years, he has continued to experiment with different forms and techniques, bringing together art, mathematics and creativity through paper.
‘An Origami Odyssey’ offered visitors an opportunity to experience Ishaan’s evolving work while highlighting the creative possibilities of a simple sheet of paper.
