Tata Power Signs MoU with BPCL to Develop 110 kV Power Infrastructure for its Landmark PRFCCU Project at Mumbai Refinery

Bengaluru  : Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for the development of 110 kV power infrastructure to meet the 90 MW power requirement of BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai Refinery.

The PRFCCU project is a landmark initiative in India’s refining sector – the first project of its kind being executed in India, and a strategic milestone in BPCL’s journey towards higher-value product recovery and petrochemical diversification. With a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and a project outlay of approximately ₹14,203 crore, it is BPCL’s second-largest project currently under execution and the largest ever undertaken at Mumbai Refinery. By enhancing domestic value addition, PRFCCU will contribute to India’s energy security and the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Under the MoU, Tata Power will provide 110 kV connectivity and undertake the design and development of the associated power infrastructure required to meet the project’s power requirement. The infrastructure development entails a significant investment in strengthening power connectivity and transmission infrastructure.  This infrastructure development is envisaged to be completed over approximately 24 months with a combined estimated outlay of approx. Rs. 250 Cr for Tata Power and BPCL, subject to applicable approvals and project milestones.

Beyond meeting BPCL’s immediate power requirements, the initiative will strengthen Tata Power’s transmission network in the Trombay area, supporting anticipated growth in electricity demand from large industrial consumers and other concentrated-load developments in this strategically important industrial zone.

As part of its long-term plan to build a robust, reliable and future-ready power network for Mumbai, Tata Power also plans to strengthen its transmission infrastructure at Trombay through the development of a 400 kV transmission facility over the next five years. This planned augmentation is expected to enhance power evacuation capability and support reliable grid availability for Mumbai’s industrial and commercial ecosystem.

Through this strategic collaboration, Tata Power and BPCL reaffirm their commitment to strengthening Mumbai’s energy infrastructure and enhancing energy security. It also reinforces Tata Power’s commitment of investing in transmission & distribution infrastructure to support long term industrial growth & energy self-reliance.
