1 in 2 Indians frequently miss cleaning under beds and furniture: Dyson ‘How India Cleans’ Study 2026

India : Today, Dyson unveiled the results of its first ‘How India Cleans’ study  which investigates the cleaning habits and behaviours of Indian households, the frustrations that persist after cleaning, and what people expect from floorcare technology. The study, undertaken by over 650 respondents across seven Indian cities, reveals that the challenge is not simply how often people clean, but whether their products clean effectively throughout the whole home.

For Dyson, understanding these behaviours is critical to our engineering approach, helping us to solve the problems others ignore. Knowing what people are trying to remove, where it is being missed and what creates additional work helps Dyson define problems more precisely and develop technology around real-world cleaning conditions, as well as uncovering hidden secrets about the way we clean our homes.

“People are demanding more from their vacuum cleaners in a single clean, from tackling fine dust and long hair to cleaning across different surfaces and hard-to-reach spaces. Dyson vacuums are engineered to deliver advanced performance as complete systems for effective cleaning throughout the home. This includes powerful, fade-free suction to capture fine dust and debris, an intelligent cleaner head engineered for different surfaces and advanced filtration with machine sealing to ensure what is captured remains trapped inside. And as part of the Dyson difference, all our products are backed by relentless testing, so they are built to last.” – Tim Hare, Design and Development Engineer, Floor Care at Dyson.

Indians are putting in the time. But is every clean complete?

More than half of respondents spend between 30 minutes and one hour cleaning their floors, with a further 11% spending between one and two hours. Yet the study shows that time spent does not always translate into the result people expect.

•             Different surfaces, one cleaning routine: Indian homes require cleaning across different surfaces. While hard flooring is prevalent, 72% of respondents also have carpets and rugs at home, alongside surfaces including marble (51%), vitrified or ceramic tiles (49%) and granite (43%). The challenge is not the variety alone, but that one cleaning routine needs to move effectively between different floor types.

•             Hair remains a persistent cleaning frustration: More than one in three consumers (36%) identify human or pet hair left behind on floors as one of their most common cleaning frustrations. Long hair can also wrap around conventional brush bars, creating an additional task after the floor has been cleaned.

•             The neglected spots: Over half of respondents (52%) say areas beneath furniture are frequently missed, while 48% struggle to effectively clean corners and edges. A floor may appear clean while dust remains beneath furniture, along edges or in narrow gaps that are more difficult to see and reach.

•             Out of sight, only to settle again: A further 38% of respondents say dust settles again quickly after cleaning. Household dust is light enough to become airborne through everyday movement, before settling again on surfaces. For an effective clean, the challenge is therefore not simply moving dust from where it is visible but removing it completely.

Seeking solutions: what do people want from floorcare technology?

•             Technology leads the choice: What people prioritise when choosing floorcare cleaning products offers a clear indication of what they expect. Better technology is cited by 61% of respondents, followed by better cleaning performance (54%) and trust (49%). By comparison, 21% cite better prices or offers.

•             A whole-home task, not a floor-only routine: The study also indicates that consumers increasingly use vacuum cleaners as whole-home cleaning tools. Respondents use them under furniture (71%), on hard floors (70%), carpets and rugs (69%), upholstery (69%), and beds and mattresses (63%). This wider range of tasks reflects the need for technology that can move easily between surfaces and spaces around the home.
