From booking a last-minute trip to escape burnout to choosing destinations that reflect their personality, a new generation of travellers is rewriting the rules.
• Micro-Cation: When 72 Hours Is All, You Need
WHAT: A short 24 to 72-hour getaway that fits into the rhythm of everyday life. Not a big annual event – just a quick reset whenever the moment calls for it.
66% of Gen Z book their trips within days or weeks of travelling, and 87% prefer trips that last under a week. ¹ Searches by Indian Gen Z on Airbnb for summer travel were up over 30% year-on-year², with 2–6 night stays rising nearly 80% for domestic travel.3.
• Room Rotting: Doing Nothing Is The Whole Point
WHAT: Travelling specifically to do very little. No sightseeing — just the stay, the people, and the slow hours in between. The home becomes the whole point of the trip.
2 out of 3 Gen Z travellers travel with the intention of doing nothing on a trip, while 8 in 10 spend at least half their trip at their accommodation. ¹
• De-influenced Travel: Going Beyond The Viral Hotspots
WHAT: Actively moving away from viral hotspots toward places that feel genuinely undiscovered. Being first matters more than following the crowd.
Nearly all Gen Z travellers (95%) want their trips to feel personal and unique and not pre-planned, while 90% actively seek undiscovered places over viral recommendations. ¹
• Mirror Trip: Travel That Looks Exactly Like Your Personality
WHAT: Mirror tripping is travelling based on your personality – choosing destinations, stays and experiences that reflect who you are. Self-expression is now becoming a key part of trip planning.
92% travellers find it is important that their destination matches their personal taste and 87% believe travel reflects their identity.¹
• Why-cation: Travelling For A Feeling, Not A Destination
WHAT: A trip sparked by a mood rather than a place. Chasing a specific feeling, whether that’s the slowness of nature, the discovery of a new food culture, or simply time away from routine. The destination follows the desire, not the other way around.
67% of Gen Z say no two trips they’ve taken have ever looked the same. The top activities for Gen Z on a trip are experiences around food, nature, culture and adventure.¹
• Local Lore Hunting: A Day In The Life Of A Local
WHAT: Local lore hunting involves exploring the local places of a city or a town while travelling. These might be the everyday, unglamorous parts where people usually buy their everyday grocery or even off-grid spots in the city
81% of Gen Z travellers enjoy exploring local markets, grocery stores, or everyday neighborhood spots when they travel. ¹
• Menty B Travel: Booking A Break to Relax
WHAT: Taking a trip specifically because you’re overwhelmed and need out. Not planned, not optimised — just necessary. Travel as a mental health tool.
Taking a break from stress/burnout is the top trigger to plan a trip for Gen Z (43%).¹
• Side-Questing: The Era of Many Small Adventures
WHAT: The shift from saving up for one annual holiday to taking several smaller trips throughout the year. Travel becomes less of a main event and more of an ongoing part of life.
7 in 10 Gen Z travellers prefer 3 short trips over 1 long annual holiday. ¹
• Anti-itinerary Trips: Leaving Room for the Unexpected
WHAT: Travelling with intentional gaps in the schedule or no schedule at all. Spontaneity isn’t a lack of planning. It’s the whole point.
Nearly two-thirds (64%) intentionally leave parts of their schedule open, while 74% say the best travel memories are often the unplanned ones. ¹
• Dry Tripping: Choosing Calm Over Chaos
WHAT: Choosing slow travel, rest and meaningful experiences over bars, clubs and packed social itineraries. The vibe is calm, not chaotic.
Nature and slow travel top Gen Z’s activity preferences (44%). Only 9% of Gen Z travellers look at travel from a perspective of going out to enjoy the nightlife and partying. ¹
• Canon Event: The Unplanned Moment That Defines the Whole Trip
WHAT: The unplanned, unscheduled moment that ends up being what you remember the trip by. A long conversation that went on for hours. A slow morning nobody wanted to end. A shared meal on the last night. Simple moments at your stay are often remembered more than major attractions.
80% of Gen Z travellers say small moments on a trip matter more to them than famous attractions. ¹
