Amazon Collaborates with Telangana Government to Bring AI Literacy to 1 Million Students in Underserved Communities Annually

Amazon today announced a collaboration with the Government of Telangana’s School Education Department to integrate AI literacy into the academic curriculum of government schools across the State. Delivered through the Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) program, the initiative will reach 1 million students annually, making Telangana one of the first states in India to embed AI education into the school curriculum at scale.

The program introduces AI literacy for students in grades 6–9 through a digital learning textbook developed by SCERT Telangana, with content and implementation support from nonprofit Pi Jam Foundation and hands-on training through its EdTech platform, CodeMitra.

The initiative is part of Amazon’s commitment to bring AI literacy and career awareness to 4 million underserved government school students by 2030 through curriculum integration, hands-on learning, career exposure, and teacher training. Aligned with the Government of India’s National Education Policy 2020, it aims to prepare students, especially in underserved regions, for future jobs and technologies.

Dr. Yogita Rana, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Govt. Education Department, Govt of Telangana, said, “Our partnership with Amazon marks a significant step in ensuring that one million government school students annually don’t just use technology but understand how it works and can apply it to solve real-world problems. Under the guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, we are embedding AI literacy into our state’s school curriculum and equipping Telangana’s next generation with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to thrive in an AI-driven economy.”

Samir Kumar, Country Manager, Amazon India, said, “Our vision with Amazon Future Engineer is to democratize access to AI literacy for millions of underserved students across India, and our collaboration with the Government of Telangana is proof of what’s possible when the public and private sectors unite behind equitable, future-ready education. This is just the beginning—we are committed to reaching 4 million students by 2030 and help more young people build foundational AI skills for the future.”

How the program works

Through this initiative, students receive 25 hours of structured AI learning annually, computational thinking, decision-making systems, and real-world applications of AI. The curriculum is designed to help students move beyond using technology to understanding how it works, building critical thinking and problem-solving skills from an early age. To support implementation, the Telangana government has trained more than 28,000 teachers and is strengthening classroom infrastructure for interactive learning. The CodeMitra platform provides curriculum content, hands-on activities, and progress-tracking tools across the state’s government school network.

Strengthening digital infrastructure for underserved schools

Beyond curriculum integration, Amazon is supporting digital access in underserved schools by providing more than 2,000 refurbished laptops to 93 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) and 152 Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) schools across Telangana. Amazon will also organize skills-based volunteering sessions, where its employees provide one-on-one mentorship, career guidance, and exposure to future career opportunities.

As India prepares to expand AI education in schools from 2026–27, Telangana offers an early model for delivering AI learning at scale within the public education system. By combining curriculum integration, teacher capacity building, digital infrastructure, and industry partnerships, the initiative demonstrates a practical approach to preparing students for an AI-enabled future.
