New Delhi : Intending to address hypothermia in newborns, in India, GenWorks, the country’s leading digital medical and healthcare solution provider, has developed a series of high-tech gadgets for newborn care – Lullaby Warmer, Lullaby Resus Prime, Bilicare, and Brainz Monitor. These devices will ensure that a baby, especially one born prematurely, begins a safe journey in the world.
All newborns risk developing hypothermia (abnormally low body temperature), which can lead to serious health complications if not addressed immediately. The risk is higher in babies born unwell or prematurely (babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy).
According to the World Health Organization, India has one of the world’s highest numbers of preterm babies, with around 3.5 million born prematurely every year. Some suffer from various disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, sensory deficits, and learning disabilities.
Dr. Deepak K. Vasudev, consultant, Neonatologist at Apollo Cradle Hospital, Bengaluru, said, “Keeping a baby warm is one of the most important steps in baby care. We wipe out the amniotic fluid, dry it, and cover the baby with a preheated towel. In preterm babies, we also put a cap on the head. Covering the head with a cap immediately after birth reduces the heat lost through the body surface. Preterm babies require more than just a blanket and kangaroo/skin-to-skin care from a mother to reduce heat loss. With every drop in temperature, the mortality of a baby increases.”
Lullaby Warmer is a device that’s explicitly designed to regulate and monitor the right temperature for vulnerable babies. Meanwhile, those with breathing difficulties are aided using Lullaby Resus Prime, and the more serious cases are treated with advanced ventilation.
“Lullaby Warmer creates a consistently warm bed for the baby and has built-in monitors to alert caregivers in case of any temperature fluctuations. Any baby who needs assistance at birth and further care in intensive care is nursed in the Warmer or incubator. Lullaby Resus Prime, on the other hand, provides artificial breath and helps regulate the amount of oxygen given to a baby,” added Dr. Vasudev.
Bilicare is a device that can measure bilirubin levels in a baby’s blood instantly. The buildup of bilirubin in babies leads to jaundice. High levels of bilirubin can also affect the development of brain and hearing abilities. Premature babies also need appropriate neuroprotection and neuro-monitoring. Brainz Monitor is a vital device to address that. The device maps a baby’s brain, using tiny electrodes, to track functioning, including seizures, even silent ones. Brain function monitoring is also used for monitoring sick babies undergoing cooling treatment or having seizures in neonatal intensive care.
