Stroke- Raising awareness and showing support for survivors!

Stroke has been and continues to be a widespread disease worldwide, it is currently the single largest cause of disability and the second largest cause of death globally. A stroke occurs when the blood flow to the brain is disrupted and the lack of oxygen starts to damage the brain cells and tissues. If not addressed on time, strokes can lead to brain damage or even death. Cases of stroke are increasing worldwide due to lifestyle or genetic changes. While people above 55 years were more susceptible to it earlier, it is increasingly becoming common in young professionals. There are many risk factors that raise the risk of strokes including tobacco & alcohol abuse, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, atrial fibrillation, raised blood lipid levels, obesity, genetic disposition, stress and depression.

In 2016 alone, stroke was responsible for 116 million days of life lost to death and disability. The individual lifetime risk of stroke is currently 1 in every 4 people. Stroke has already reached epidemic proportions. Globally 1 in 4 adults over the age of 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. 12.2 million people worldwide will have their first stroke this year and 6.5 million will die as a result. Over 110 million people in the world have experienced a stroke. The incidence of stroke increases significantly with age, however over 60% of strokes happen to people under the age of 70 and 16% happen to those under the age of 50. One of the main clinical risk factors for stroke is high blood pressure as a result of atherosclerosis.
