Suffering from slip disc at 4 levels, 28-year-old patient undergoes endoscopic spine surgery at the CK Birla Hospital

The CK Birla Hospital® treats 28-year-old patient from Tamil Nadu for lumbar spine via endoscopic spine surgery

New Delhi : Furthering the commitment to strengthening delivery of global standards of clinical excellence, the CK Birla Hospital® successfully conducted an endoscopic spine surgery on a young patient from Tamil Nadu who was suffering with 4 level (L2 to S1) slip disc. The 28-year-old was unable to walk due to severe spine issues and was recommended open spine surgery which would result in large scars, blood transfusions and increased post-operative care.

Upon further evaluation at the CK Birla Hospital®, the team of doctors led by Dr. Ashwani Maichand, Department of Orthopaedics recommended Endoscopic Spine Surgery (ESS). ESS is a surgical procedure using micro-sized incisions (less than 1 inch) and small tubular systems in combination with an endoscope to visualize the surgical field. While endoscopic surgical approaches are commonly used to treat other areas of the body (eg. gastrointestinal), advances in optics, visualization of tissues, and spinal imaging make ESS a surgical treatment choice for many patients.

Mr. Akshat Seth, Chief Executive Officer, CK Birla Healthcare said, “We are committed to achieving our goal of providing global standards of healthcare by using advanced medical innovations and techniques like endoscopic spine surgeries for our patients. This case, like many others, is a testimony to our legacy of delivering high-quality healthcare.”

Dr. Ashwani Maichand said, “It was a complex surgery because the slip disc was at 4 levels, which is extremely rare in nature. We suggested endoscopic spine surgery as it is an advanced, state-of-the-art form of minimally invasive spine surgery designed to provide the patient with a quicker recovery time and less recurring pain as compared to traditional spine surgery methods. ESS can also help preserve the normal range of spine mobility post-operatively. The patient was walking within 6 hours of the surgery and with proper post-operative care was successfully discharged after 48 hours of his surgery.”

“I was quite worried as I could not walk beyond 10–20 steps. Top hospitals in Tamil Nadu and even in Delhi were recommending open spine surgery which would leave large scars. But after meeting Dr. Ashwani Maichand at the CK Birla Hospital®, he assured me that my condition could be treated with minimal scarring and pain, giving me the confidence to proceed with endoscopic spine surgery. I returned to my home in Tamil Nadu after 4 days of surgery and am now living a pain-free and healthy life”, the patient stated.

“Our hospital at Punjabi Bagh aims to take forward patient-centric and clinically reliable care that we stand for. The success of this case is a reaffirmation of our clinical excellence through a case that is complex. We will continue to use medically advanced treatment options for our patients,’’ said Mr. Vipul Jain, Chief Business Officer, CK Birla Hospital®.
