That was the turning point in my life,” Sir David Attenborough on the series ‘Life on Earth’ that changed everything.

As Sir David Attenborough marks his 100th birthday, Sony BBC Earth invites audiences to step back in time with Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure—a celebratory special that revisits the creation of the landmark series Life on Earth.

Before he became the most recognisable voice in natural history storytelling, Attenborough’s career at the BBC had already soared. He had risen through the ranks, even being considered for the role of Director-General. Yet, despite the prestige, his heart remained tethered to the wild—to the thrill of travel, the wonder of filming, and the art of telling nature’s stories. His brother, filmmaker Richard Attenborough, offered a simple but profound piece of advice: “You should go on doing what you are marvellous at.”

Within weeks, Attenborough was offered the chance to helm a series exploring the evolution of life itself. The project became Life on Earth—a groundbreaking production that not only redefined natural history filmmaking but also brought the epic story of our planet to millions worldwide. Reflecting on that moment, Attenborough himself said: “That was the turning point in my life.”

Now, a century into his extraordinary journey, Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure offers viewers a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the series that shaped him—and, in many ways, shaped the way the world sees nature.

Watch the behind-the-scenes moments in the premiere of Making of Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure on 8th May, only on Sony BBC Earth, at 1 PM and 9 PM.
