Immune-boosting foods that aid in managing the symptoms of dengue!

With the arrival of monsoon season, dengue, a rising viral infection, has drastically increased. Dengue is increasingly more common because of climatic change and its consequences. Increased population brought on by urbanization and deforestation has also contributed to the vectors’ favorable environmental conditions. Poorly maintained areas and stagnant water sources make for the perfect breeding place for mosquitoes.

Dengue is caused by the four kind of virus which are predominantly transmitted through infected female Aedes mosquito bites. Although all precautions can be taken to prevent dengue, there is still a need to be vigilant in the event of an infection. While dengue starts with a high fever (102-104 degrees F), dengue destruct platelets as well causing thrombocytopenia.

Due to the dangerously rapid platelet reduction caused by dengue, patients may need to be admitted to the hospital. The platelet count decreases along with the fever. You must consume specific foods that aid in your body’s platelet production to stop that from happening. Low blood pressure brought on by dengue illness may result in dengue shock syndrome. Papaya leaves

Papaya leaves contain a unique phytochemical called acetogenin, which can be a great remedy for dengue patients as it ensures rapid increase in platelet count. Papaya leaves contain many natural plant compounds such as flavonoids and carotene, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. 4-5 papaya leaves can be boiled in water to make papaya leaf juice easily at home. drink 1 cup in the morning and evening.


According to studies, wheatgrass extract can help increase platelet count naturally. It contains organic compounds which are rich in folic acid, vitamin B1, B2, B6, B12, and pantothenic acid. It also has minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron.  It helps to cope with prolonged weakness and increase red blood cells. You can drink a cup of wheatgrass juice with a squeeze of lemon for maximum benefits.

Dry grapes

Dry grapes are a rich source of iron and can help dengue patients with low platelets. Soak a handful of raisins overnight and consume them in the morning with the soaked water. This remedy is also very useful for anemic patients with low hemoglobin levels.

Vitamin C in foods

Vitamin C is another important nutrient that helps the body increase the production of platelets. You can eat oranges, gooseberries, lemons, bell peppers because these fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of vitamin C, which helps your body during dengue. Lemon can breakdown unnecessary toxins and help passing through urine.

Coriander leaves

Coriander leaves is one of the best home remedies for dengue. Including the leaves or dhania frequently during dengue will help to reduce the body temperature and strengthen the immunity system; also helps to increase the blood platelet count. If you dislike the taste of papaya leaves, you can consider taking coriander leaves in the form of juice or tea.

Fenugreek water

If your platelet count is dangerously low, you can try this natural remedy. Soak 1 tablespoon fenugreek seeds in a glass of water overnight. The next morning, drain the water, warm it slightly and drink. The seeds can be soaked for just 3-4 hours during the day to reap the benefits.


This deep red vegetable helps prevent free radical damage to platelets. If you want to avoid dizziness or drowsiness due to dengue, drink beetroot soup at regular intervals. You can even add beetroot in your salads and soups.


Pomegranate has been used for various health reasons over centuries. Pomegranate contains vitamins and minerals. It is essential for dengue sufferers to avoid dehydration and prevents them from falling further.

Foods to avoid strictly during dengue

–              Non-vegetarian

–              Carbonated drinks

–              Processed food

–              Caffeine

–              Spicy food

–              Self-medication

The biggest problem for a dengue patient is dehydration. We recommend consuming tender coconut, buttermilk, soups, and any liquid that isn’t alcohol or carbonated beverages to manage or prevent dehydration issues.

Since there is no vaccination for dengue, it is better to prevent the disease than to treat an infection. To treat the condition, there is no medication. It is crucial to stay in bed as much as possible and keep the body’s fluid balance.

Dengue fever can reoccur too and develop rapidly after the initial symptoms appear. So, if you are bitten by morning mosquitoes and happen to see any of the symptoms, you should consult a doctor and seek proper treatment immediately. Self-medication should strictly be avoided. Also, the above foods should be taken as a supplement. Medical treatment should be vital.
