New Delhi: Likee, the pioneering global short video creation platform by Singapore-based BIGO Technology Pte Ltd, yet again emerged as the 6th most downloaded app in the world in the Q1 Global App Market Index by App Annie – a leading mobile data and analytics company. The report reveals detailed information on various developments on mobile platforms and analyzes the top downloaded apps, based on the finding that there has been a dramatic growth in app downloads/usage and phone usage during the lockdown triggered by COVID-19 or coronavirus. The number of new apps downloaded in Q1 2020 was 22.5 billion on Google Play (5% YoY growth) and 9 billion on the iTunes App Store (15% YoY growth).
Likee’s journey in 2020 began with exciting campaigns such as #Fortune2020 and #BeMyValentine. These campaigns brought about a digital twist in traditional rituals or celebrations to capture everyone’s imagination. All the campaigns received an overwhelming response from Likee users. As the quarter progressed, the world had a new challenge to address in the name of COVID-19. Taking up the responsibility to impact users positively, Likee stepped-up to fight against the fake information with a unique approach.
With all other Likee features as constant during Q1 2020, the app also introduced a dedicated section to deliver reliable information on COVID-19. The platform introduced a ‘Fight Corona’ dashboard for its users where the latest updates related to the pandemic are updated frequently. It provides details of all Indian states, Union Territories as well as different countries across the world in the dashboard. The data given on the app has been sourced from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Previously, App Annie had also revealed Likee as No. 1 “breakout” app in December 2019. The “breakout” app list included 10 apps that witnessed the highest growth in downloads between 2018 and 2019. Also, as per JOYY Report Q4 2019, Likee’s average mobile MAU (115.3 million) experienced a substantial YoY growth of 208%.
In India, Likee is available in 15 regional Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Telugu, Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam and Punjabi. The platform’s sharp focus on hyper-localization of the content is contributing to its strong growth. Likee has emerged as an app the youth identifies with.
